Andrew Bailey has been appointed Governor of the bank of England, taking over from Canadian Mark Carney, who steps down in the middle of March after 6 years. He joins the United Nations shortly to be involved in matters concerning climate change.
Mr Bailey currently heads up the Financial Conduct Authority, a body that has not always covered itself in glory over its dealing with various negative situations, where it was felt it didn't come up to scratch. While the Government who authorised his appointment clearly think he is the best man for the job, this feeling isn't universally shared by other authorities involved in financial markets and the UK economy. Given the current groundswell for gender equality, it also exposes the Bank of England's lack of senior female candidates for the Governor position from within the Old Lady. Not overly surprising as the UK's financial scene over hundreds of years, mainly London based, has been seen very much as a male preserve and not that welcoming to women in general. Change is coming through now but it won't happen overnight.
It is however happening overnight in the somewhat different world of sport where female presenters are now appearing in every sport on television. Some of this being on the back of the recent successful football World Cup finals held in France and very well attended but it isn't just confined to football.
