Eureka Moment

I built a career in homelessness and drug and alcohol charities. I genuinely loved my work, but after years of challenges I felt disillusioned. I was burned out and craving a change. Just when I thought things couldn't get worse, my mum passed away.

One of my mum's favourite sayings was, "You're a long time dead." She believed life was too short for regrets and constantly encouraged me to make the most of it. Her words stayed with me after she died. I started to think, "There's got to be more to life than this." I didn't want to waste any more time; I needed to do something meaningful. That's how my commercial cleaning and property maintenance firm, Best Choice Cleaning Company, was born.

Finance

I didn't have any financial backing and had to take a leap of faith in myself. I drained my savings and did whatever it took to scrape together enough funds to invest in the business.

Regrets

I wish I had started my business years earlier. If I'd begun at twenty, I would have had more energy and more years ahead of me. That said, another part of me believes that we start our businesses when we're ready. Perhaps I wouldn't have achieved the same success if I had started at twenty.

What Would You Have Changed?

I would have hired a larger team much earlier. I tried to handle everything myself, which was a big mistake as I had no time to focus on growing the business strategically. Looking back, my reluctance to hire stemmed from a fear that I didn't have the experience to lead a bigger and mainly male team. When I finally overcame that fear, it was a game changer.
