Dimitri Philippou, alongside his Greek countryman Paul, wants to introduce an innovative range of wooden bikes into the UK, for users who enjoy innovative design and a very "green" product, coming from certified renewable forests
How did you first become involved with COCO-MATBIKE and its founder Paul Efmorfidis?
I met Paul while he was visiting South Africa. We instantly had a connection and got on from that moment. Obviously, we have Greece in common but also a shared interest in organic and sustainable brands and businesses. Our relationship and friendship grew from there and that's how I came to be the owner of the business for COCO-MATBIKE.UK. I am looking forward to helping spread Paul's vision.
Why do you think the UK is going to be a great market for these bikes?
There are a couple of key reasons. The first is that the country is well disposed towards sustainable issues such as climate change and is passionate about making a difference. You can really see how the people of the UK have embraced this in the last few years with their passion in making a difference. Plus, the government helps, it has several initiatives such as the cycle to work scheme or initiatives aimed at encouraging the population to eat healthy and be healthy. Combine that with a really engaged cycling movement and we think the UK is not only ready for COCO-MATBIKE but will welcome it as a great way of enjoying nature and going green.
How would you describe riding a COCO-MATBIKE? From a pure cycling point of view, it's a pleasure to ride, super comfortable with an iconic, luxury feel. It's also a real head turner and attention getter. There's a sociable aspect riding our bikes, people look at you, stop you and want to know more about the bike.
What are the main challenges for launching a new brand in a new market
The real challenge for us has been quite simple - Covid - which has pretty much affected every area of our business. It has challenged all our plans and our timings. If it weren't for Covid....! Having said that, the timing now is great - there is a feeling that people really want to get out there and enjoy life and nature again.
Do you think green/eco companies are well understood?
There has certainly been a growing understanding from consumers with more and more demanding and embracing this mindset. I think what makes it easier for us is that Paul had this motivation from day one, COCO-MATBIKE comes from his real belief in eco and the environment - and his love for it and his passion for cycling. It's not something that has been forced on him or manufactured. Because of this, I think the brand's eco and green credentials are easy to see, touch and understand. It's a really simple concept that you can immediately fall in love with.
