Uber has had its licence to operate in London cancelled having failed to get it’s house in order after two previous extensions of 15 months and a further two months in September. The TFL (Transport for London) have decided that while Uber have improved their systems, following the initial decision not to give them a 5 year licence in 2018, there were still significant loopholes in their booking system to allow unlicensed and possibly uninsured drivers, to upload photos to other drivers accounts.
They
estimate 14,000 journeys have been made where this might have occurred and that
the company did not meet the exacting criteria expected of them by the TFL.Effectively
in many instances the passenger had no idea who the driver was or anything
about his background, criminal record etc. It also appears that the company’s
systems were very open to serious abuse, that made it easy for drivers they had
dismissed to sign on with a new account and carry on as before, no matter how
serious the reason for their dismissal. They are expected to appeal and during
this three week process will carry on as before.
